Cosima Spender
On graduating from the NFTS in 2000, Cosima worked with fellow Documentary graduate George Amponsah on the feature-length documentary The Importance of Being Elegant. A film about Papa Wemba and the cult of the cloth, it aired on BBC2 as a flagship instalment of the channel’s Storyville strand, and received widespread critical acclaim. It was shortlisted for a Grierson Award in 2005 and won Best Documentary at The Zanzibar Film Festival.
Since then, Cosima has directed Dolce vita africana (2008), for Tigerlily Films. A documentary portrait of the African photographer Malick Sidibe, the film journeys through Malian history, inspired by his iconic images. Cosima made the film with a number of fellow graduates, among them cinematographer Natasha Braier, and editor Emiliano Battista.
