THE SCHOOL

George Amponsah

George has been making films since he became a super-8 movie addict in the late ‘80s. In 1997 he won a Post Office scholarship to study at the NFTS, where he came to study Documentary.

Four years after graduating, and after two years in production, George and fellow graduate Cosima Spender’s feature-length documentary The Importance of Being Elegant was released. A film about Papa Wemba, and the cult of the cloth, it aired on BBC2 as a flagship instalment of the channel’s Storyville strand, and received widespread critical acclaim. It was shortlisted for a Grierson Award in 2005 and won Best Documentary at The Zanzibar Film Festival.

George’s latest feature length documentary, The Fighting Spirit, is about 3 young boxers, 2 men and a woman who fight their way out of an impoverished shantytown in Ghana in to the rings of New York and London for the biggest prizes in the business.

George is currently developing several new documentary projects.
