Daniel Vernon
Daniel graduated in 2005, with the documentary Fountain of Youth. A film about a small, quirky Californian community of over 70s who only travel by golf-cart, it caught the imagination of people on the festivals circuit, and was picked up by prestigious festivals including Edinburgh, Sheffield and Leipzig. Daniel was nominated for a Grierson Award, and the Jerwood Prize, and The Royal Anthropological Institute awarded him the Blackwell Student Video Prize Commendation.
Daniel has had no trouble living up to his early success. In April 2009, he won the Break-through Talent award at the BAFTA Television Craft Awards, for his BBC Wonderland documentary about Arthur Boyt, The Man Who Eats Badgers. When interviewed at the awards ceremony, he said he’d chosen his subject because, when he met Boyt he knew there was far more to this man than met the eye, and that the most difficult part of filming was getting him to be himself, and not act up to the camera!
Daniel also offered his advice for people who want to get into the business: Keep persevering despite all the knockbacks. He is currently researching his next project for the BBC.
