Kristian Miilen

In 2004, I made the leap from unsatisfying office work into the world of film sound. I worked as a boom operator on many Estonian feature films and recorded documentaries, commercials and student shorts. In 2006 I had a wonderful opportunity to work as location sound recordist on the award-winning Estonian low budget feature Klass.

Being mainly self-taught, I wanted some time in an educational environment to hone my skills and get a deeper insight into the overall process of filmmaking. The opportunities that the NFTS provides to meet and learn from active professional well-established sound recordists have been invaluable.

Ideally, I’ll work all over the world in the future. I love the shooting period of a film. I love the feeling when I know I have gotten good sound from a difficult shoot. I love the dirt, snow and sand, the freezing cold and the scorching sun that sometimes come with shooting a film. I love the pain in my shoulders when the booming gets tough. And I love to be part of a team creating something special for others to feel and think about.

Kristian Miilen was supported by grants from the Estonian Cultural Endowment, the Estonian Film Foundation, the Estonian Filmmakers’ Union and the Estonian Ministry of Culture.
