Beeban Kidron
Director Beeban Kidron graduated in 1990, the same year as her BBC series Oranges are Not the Only Fruit was aired, winning a BAFTA for best drama series/serial, and a Royal Television Society Award for Best Drama Serial. Since then, she has stayed in the limelight with films such as To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (nominated for a Golden Globe Award) and more recently the TV series Murder, starring Julie Walters (nominated for an Emmy Award, and winner of BAFTA's Best Drama Serial Award), and Bridget Jones II: Edge of Reason (nominated for a Golden Globe Award).
Beeban is keen to get more women interested in filmmaking. “I once gave a talk at a girls' school and, once I'd finished, 29 out of the 30 girls wanted to be film directors. I think that's where we need to get girls interested in making films. We need to give them the idea that they can, that it's one of the things on their horizon.” With her successes to date, she can certainly be considered a good role model for the women filmmakers of tomorrow.
Beeban is one of the driving forces behind Film Club, a new service run by movie-lovers to introduce children and teenagers to the wonder of films by helping teachers and pupils form clubs in schools to show fantastic movies from every era and every corner of the world.
