McLaren Award for NFTS animation Stanley Pickle

Newly-released graduation film Stanley Pickle has won the coveted McLaren Award for New British Short Animation at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere.

The award is named after Stirling-born and Glasgow School of Art-trained animator Norman McLaren. Celebrated for his innovative work with the GPO film unit, McLaren was a true pioneer. Throughout his career, he experimented with ideas and animation techniques, such as drawing images directly on to film and even drawing on the soundtrack. So it is particularly apt that McLaren should be remembered with this award, which provides a focus for new British animation and recognises the free spirit of creativity.

You can see a trailer from Stanley Pickle, read about the animation techniques used by director Vicky Mather, and find out what inspired her to make a career in animation here.
